About the maker

Baba Tree

Made in Ghana

Baba Tree baskets are woven by hand in Bolgatanga, in Ghana's Upper East Region, from elephant grass, using techniques rooted in Gurunsi weaving tradition. The company was started by Canadian Gregory MacCarthy, who first came to the area in 1999, and each basket is made one at a time by a named master weaver in the Bolgatanga workshop.

Sustainability: weavers are paid fair wages plus commission, and Baba Tree covers their medical expenses. The company practices regenerative agriculture and rainwater harvesting on its land and offsets the carbon from every shipment.
