Embrace Hygge: How to Transform Your Space for Autumn

With the change of season, it is the perfect time to update your interior space.  As the crisp breezes of Autumn sweep in and the leaves begin to transform into vibrant hues of orange, red, and gold, it’s the perfect time to infuse your home with the essence of Hygge—this beautiful Danish concept that represents coziness, comfort, and contentment. Grab your Pumpkin Spike Latte and settle in as we share our simple tips for updating your home this Fall.

Before We Dive in, Let's Explain the Philosophy of Hygge

At its core, Hygge is about creating a cozy environment that nurtures your well-being and promotes connection with the people you love. In the spirit of Hygge, our aim this season is to make your indoor space a sanctuary from the chill outside, a place filled with warmth, light, and an abundance of natural elements. By making simple changes in your home to incorporate cozy elements, you can create a sense of peace and contentment for everyone who enters. Doesn't that sound lovely?

Place Candles Everywhere

Let's start with the obvious . . . candles. No Hygge home is complete without the warm glow of candles. Lighting candles creates an intimate atmosphere that instantly transforms a space. In addition to the twinkle a candle brings, consider selecting a scented candle that evokes the season— I love woody notes like Auburn, Cedar and Leather . . . think crackly fire in the woods. With the power of scent, you will instantly bring the outside in.

You can place candles strategically around your home. I like to sprinkle small tea lights on bookshelves, the mantle, and on shelves in the bathroom. Larger candles are reserved for the kitchen, dining room, coffee table and outside where I may want my candles to burn for longer or have them provide more of the ambient light. Group multiple candles together in various heights for a little extra drama and ambient lighting. Moody and intimate is what you're after and don't be afraid to overdue it. The more candles.

Get out Those Oversized Pillows and Cozy Blankets

As the temperature dips, it’s time to swap out those lightweight summer linens for thicker, cozier ones. Look for soft textures like wool, alpaca or chunky knit throws. Add rich, warm colors or darker shades of black to offset light colored furniture and be sure to make these additions visible. A large chunky throw draped over your sofa is an instant invitation to snuggle.

Decorative pillows are another essential element of a Hygge interior. Mix and match patterns and textures to create a layered, warm look, but my advice is to keep it somewhat simple. Play with different shapes and sizes but keep the color palette somewhat consistent; the goal is to create an inviting atmosphere that encourages relaxation. Dramatic color pops will disrupt the visual coziness and chill. Oversized pillows are a must. . . an ideal size for a sofa or bed is 22"-25" square . . . anything smaller will start to feel formal.

Fill Your Vases & Shelves with Foraged Items from Outside

One of the most delightful aspects of Autumn is the bounty that nature provides. Foraging for dried flowers, nuts, and fruits can be enjoyable and rewarding. Take a stroll through your local park, forest or even down your street to find treasures for your home. If you have littles at home, this is a great activity to include them in. Send them on a quest to find nuts, berries, dried leaves and fallen branches. Branches should be long (36-48") and on the thinner side. Leaves are best on a small branch so you can stage them. If you live in a warmer climate, look for dried feathers on oversized grasses which make for a stunning centerpiece. Anything that you think is beautiful outside will be a stunning addition in your home.

Once you’ve collected your foraged treasures, arrange them in a vase or use them to style a shelf. I love wrapping small branches with leaves around the base of a candle. Use larger twigs and dried flowers in your vases. Brass vases are my favorite way to add another twinkly element to your interior and are a beautiful balance to the organic elements. Wanna know the best part of styling with foraged items? It's Free and Sustainable.
